Twitter removed legacy verified blue ticks from all accounts on Thursday, April 20. From now on, only the accounts subscribed to paid Twitter Blue verification service would have blue ticks on the micro-blogging platform, widely described as “town square” of modern world.

The company initially announced plans to remove the legacy blue ticks on April 1, but the change applied to select accounts. Last week, Musk tweeted that the “final date for removing legacy Blue checks is 4/20,” a date with special resonance to the billionaire entrepreneur given its meaning to marijuana enthusiasts.

Immediately following the disappearance of legacy blue checks, some users began tweeting that they planned to leave the site.

Numerous high profile accounts, including Pope Francis, Bill Gates, former US president Donald Trump, Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga and more lost their blue verification checkmark.

Many eminent personalities in India from Bollywood actors to politicians to cricketers have also lost blue checks that helped verify their identity and distinguish them from impostors on the micro-blogging platform.

Twitter began making good on its promise to remove the blue checks from accounts that don’t pay a monthly fee to keep them.

Bollywood actors Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Alia Bhatt are among the big names that have lost their blue ticks on Elon-Musk owned social media platform. Politicians like CM Yogi Adityanath, RahulGandhi and Priyanka Gandhi and cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, among others, have lost their verified blue ticks from their Twitter accounts.
